Castanets

The art of playing the castanets

We all recognize the sound that this characteristic instrument creates. But few of us are aware of its curious origins.

The castanets, also known as palillos, are born with the Phoenicians. This culture, which would later establish itself in Andalusia, named this instrument as crótolas. They were handmade creations made from any type of wood, which were used to celebrate. Any reason for celebration was a perfect excuse for the Phoenicians to take out the castanets. In Addition to Flamenco, castanets are used for many regional dances in Spain.
