What is Escuela Bolera?

The bolero school combines elements of classical Spanish dance, regional folklore and the influence of ballet.

Movements of the arms and hands are very important in this style, and are characterised by being elegant, smooth and precise. The dancers perform turns, jumps, heel strikes and stomps, always maintaining an upright posture and total control over their bodies.

One of the distinctive aspects of the bolero school is the use of castanets, small percussion instruments held with the thumbs and played to accompany the music and add rhythm to the dance. Castanets require a special technique and bolero school dancers must learn to play them while performing the choreographed movements.

In terms of dress, bolero dancers usually wear traditional Spanish costumes, such as wide skirts and ruffles, Manila shawls and hair combs for the women, and jackets and tight trousers for the men.

Although the bolero school had its heyday in the 19th century, throughout the 20th century it lost popularity and was relegated to the background. However, in recent decades there has been a resurgence of interest in this style of dance, and efforts are being made to preserve and promote the bolero school in Spain and other countries.

It is important to note that the bolero school has a specific technique and requires years of practice and study to master it. There are specialised academies, conservatories and dance schools where dancers can receive training in this style.
